This familiar old noun “life”, is now used widely in the phrase “get a life!”, usually in a bad tone of voice like that – “Get a life, why don’t you!” Well, it’s said to somebody who the speaker feels is leading an unfulfilling (不充实的) life, your life is empty, dull, there’s more to life than what you’re doing, start living!

It can be serious, but it’s usually funny. It can be used for instance to a workaholic (工作狂), or for anybody specially fond of something like a television programme, always watching a particular soap (肥皂剧), shall we say. That person might be told to “get a life”.

The phrase goes back more than ten years ago. It was a US phrase in California, years and years ago, and then it became the name of a US television show. And then it became all sorts of usages around radio, television, novels, short stories—don’t take things too seriously!

Chill out! Get a life!

It happens to the best of us…people who pity me being interested in language researching, often tell me to “get a life”!

36. If someone says “get a life” to you, what do they think of your life?

A) It is immoral and bad. B) It is boring and unsatisfying.

C) It is successful and productive. D) It is too busy and too fast.

37. Which of the following statements is True according to the author?

A) We generally say the phrase with a bad voice.

B) It is only used in a serious way.

C) It might be said to someone who washes too often.

D) It is used only in US.

38. Which country does the phrase come from?

A) UK. B) Australia.

C) The USA. D) Not given.

39. What other meaning for “get a life” does the author give?

A) You need to be less angry about something.

B) You need to be less serious about something.

C) You need to be more careful about something.

D) You need to be less careful about something.

40. Which of the following statements is Not True according to the author?

A) “Get a life” is a new phrase.

B) It was once the title of a TV programme.

C) Some people say the author spends too much time studying language.

D) The phrase can be used for instance to a workaholic.

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheetwith a single line through the center.

October 14. 20__

Dear Sir or Madam,

We have received your price list and have studied it carefully. However, the price in your offer is too high for this market. If you are prepared to give us a discount of 10% for a quantity of 200. we would agree to your offer. You should note that some price cut will justify itself by an increase in business.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely yours,

Linda
